Yes people have preferences
But you should at least ask yourself why you have these preferences instead of just disregarding them as something that’s “just because”
Especially when it comes to something like race
considering that societal norms constructed “preferences” only to mask the racism and colorism behind it
Don’t say “Its just a preference, its not that big a deal” without explaining why you have that specific preference over everything else
So I have to explain why my favourite food is buffalo wings and my favourite colour is lavender?
Okay, I’m not even going to talk about how offensive it is to equate real people to food like, we’re not here for consumption or entertainment, we’re actual human beings and we are so complicated and varied but since the humanity of POC is too complex and radical for you to understand, I’ll explain it in terms you might understand.
Imagine those buffalo wings you were talking about. Now think if every single buffalo wing you had tasted, looked, smelled, and felt different. There were no two buffalo wings that were the same. Some were tangy, some were spicy, some were bland, some were stringy, some were juicy. Some had all the things that you liked in a buffalo wing but some just wouldn’t agree with your stomach.
In such a world, you could not categorically say that you liked all buffalo wings because some just didn’t taste nice but simultaneously, you could not say that you disliked all buffalo wings because some did have the things that you said you liked in buffalo wings.
If we continue on this particular trail of thought…
POC are all varied and different. Some are tall, some short, some have light hair, some dark, some are intelligent, some not, some are fat, some are thin, and so on and so forth.
But the one thing they ALL have in common is that they are all different from one another and they are JUST as deep and complex as white people. They all have hopes and dreams and ambitions and interests and favourite foods and fond memories. They all want to be happy and are human and flawed just like white people. You can’t just disregard every single one as the same as the previous one when it just isn’t the case.
- Good pick up line: Nice shirt, I love that band.
- Better pick up line: Nice shirt, I'm in that band.
i love how in the script Simon was meant to have like a leather jacket and be a total bad boy, but somehow he ended up like this
